Medical personnel had to attend to patients outside hospital premises due to the overwhelming number of serious injuries sustained post-earthquake. Black body bags were seen being transported to local mortuaries to handle the deceased.
The death toll has now climbed to 69, with rescue operations underway to locate survivors and reinstate essential services like power and water supply in the affected Cebu Province. The hospital in Bogo City faced an influx of patients, necessitating outdoor medical assistance. Reports indicate that 61 individuals have succumbed to the devastation with 134 others injured, predominantly in the vicinity of populous Bogo city.
Extensive damage was observed with collapsed bridges and roads, prompting Vice Governor Glenn Soco to declare a “state of calamity” on Cebu to facilitate resource mobilization. The aftermath revealed 20 individuals killed, with rescuers diligently working through the night to extricate victims trapped in collapsed structures, especially in Cebu. Authorities anticipate a rise in the death toll as assessments progress during daylight hours.
The earthquake’s impact was felt by over half a million individuals across the Visayan Islands, including Cebu, with damage assessments ongoing by provincial disaster response teams.
