Far-right extremists clashed with law enforcement officers at the Unite the Kingdom gathering led by Tommy Robinson in central London.
Metropolitan Police members were tasked with maintaining separation between the rally participants and anti-fascist protestors near Whitehall. Approximately 1,000 officers were deployed to prevent any confrontations between the two groups.
The Met reported that officers had to intervene at various points in Whitehall to prevent Unite the Kingdom supporters from breaching police barriers or reaching the counter demonstrators. They noted that “several officers were attacked.”
According to the Met, officers faced projectiles and had to use force to defend their cordon from being breached. Images from the rally captured a man with bloodied injuries confronting officers and being restrained.
Videos shared by the police depicted Unite the Kingdom supporters clashing with law enforcement in Whitehall, with projectiles being thrown at officers who used shields to push back the aggressors.
Police confirmed that access to the rally areas was restricted, and they were coordinating with organizers to facilitate safe exits for the attendees.
While the event organizers claimed over a million attendees, the Met Police estimated around 110,000 people participated. Many individuals were seen waving flags representing England, Britain, and Israel during the rally.
The attendees marched from the south bank to central London before assembling at Whitehall, where Tommy Robinson and actor-turned-activist Laurence Fox were present.
Robinson emphasized during the demonstration that patriotism and borders are crucial for the future. He asserted that the rally was the largest in UK history, claiming a turnout of three million attendees.
Although the exact figures remain undisclosed, the largest rally in UK history was the 2003 Stop the War protest against the Iraq war, which drew between 750,000 to over one million demonstrators.
Incidents at the event included individuals sustaining injuries, clashes between demonstrators and police, the presence of around 1,000 law enforcement officers, and efforts to prevent confrontations between different groups.
