Formula 1 driver Liam Lawson faced a tense moment during the Mexican Grand Prix when he had to slow down to avoid colliding with two marshals crossing the track. The incident occurred on the third lap of the race at turn one, where the marshals were alerted about debris on the track.
Unaware that Lawson had pitted for a front wing change due to damage from the opening lap, the marshals were instructed to wait until all cars passed before entering the track. As Lawson exited the pit lane and approached the first corner, he encountered the surprise of seeing two marshals on the track running in front of him, forcing him to reduce speed to avoid a potential collision.
Expressing his shock over the radio, Lawson exclaimed his disbelief at the situation and the danger it posed. Despite the close call, he was praised by his race engineer for handling the situation safely.
Following the incident, the FIA spokesperson mentioned that an investigation was underway to understand the events leading up to the incident and the actions taken by the marshals under race control’s instructions.
Lawson, still shaken by the incident, emphasized the danger of the situation and expressed his intent to seek a detailed explanation from his Racing Bulls team regarding the incident. He highlighted the need to prevent such occurrences in the future, calling the incident unacceptable.
The race was ultimately won by British driver Lando Norris, who now leads the championship standings with only four rounds remaining, edging out his McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri by a single point in fifth place.
